Our Musical Director

     Peter Nugent - "Nooj"

Peter Nugent

Peter, known more affectionately as ‘Nooj’, has been singing Barbershop ever since a fateful evening in 1993 as an audience member of the infamous TV show – You Bet!.  One of his old friends was on the show as a contestant,  collecting golf balls in a knee pouch whilst racing a motorbike around a race track at 120 miles per hour……… strange but true. Whilst there, he got to see the Barbershop quartet ‘Island Engagement’ served up as a ‘forfeit' for the legendary rugby player ’Gareth Chilcott’ to sing with. Peters’ jaw dropped in awe at the wonderful ringing sound (of the quartet – not Gareth Chilcott!) and it has remained open – a life changing moment and he hasn’t been the same since then!

Amongst Peter’s Barbershop highlights he has sung baritone with the 7 times champion chorus, ‘The Great Western Chorus’ and with the European Champion and Choir of the World chorus ‘The Cambridge Chord Company’, representing the UK at the Barbershop International competition in Denver in 2007.

With his old quartet ‘QED’ he won the coveted Barbershop quartet gold medal at the British Association of Barbershop Singer's (BABS) convention at Scarborough in 2007. He then went on to represent the UK at the Barbershop International convention in Nashville the following year. Peter now sings with the ‘British Quartet Champion Chorus’ (BQC’s) who can regularly be seen entertaining audiences at both the men’s and ladies annual Barbershop conventions.

More recently Peter has formed a vocal ensemble ‘Voices in Union’ where he sings bass / baritone. He also sings baritone with his new Barbershop quartet and three bestest friends in the world ‘Steel’. They are hopeful of doing well at this years British convention in Llandudno.

As well as being the Musical Director of ‘The Chordettes’, he is the Musical Director of the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) National chorus, ‘Coast to Coast’.

On the education front, Peter is a faculty member of BABS Directors College and also on the faculty of BABS Harmony College in the Quartet coaching stream.

In the real world Peter lives with his partner Alison – also an avid Barbershop singer and champion in her own right.  He is a full time (very mature) student at The University of The West of England studying Music Systems Engineering.

Quote from Peter

“I am thrilled and honoured that ‘The Chordettes’ have taken me on as their Musical Director. The girls have a wonderful attitude towards singing and the strong bond within the group and feeling of kinship is one that I experienced as soon as I walked through the door. I always look forward to every rehearsal night and know that I now have the best job ever – watch out Barbershop world – here come ‘The Chordettes’!”
